In this installment of Postcards from the Field, the topic is window well safety. Probably safe to say most people don’t give this subject much thought. However, if you’re not careful, you could find yourself crashing through one of these flimsy covers on your way to the bottom of the well. According to the International Code Council, these covers should support a minimum live load of 40 pounds per square foot. In the real world, that is rarely the case. I see mostly thin plastic covers that would not support anywhere near that much weight. This then creates a safety issue, even more so when a well is at grade. Sometimes the covers are buried in the snow or leaves and are not even visible. An accident waiting to happen, especially for kids or pets. Watch your step and be careful out there. Thanks for stopping by. See you in 2 weeks for another installment of Postcards from the Field!
